Muhammad Afzaal Hussain Memorial Scholarship

In Memory of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain

Muhammad Afzaal Hussain was an inspiring and compassionate leader who made a difference in the lives of his fellow students, friends, and family.

Muhammad Afzaal moved to New Mexico from Pakistan to pursue a graduate degree in The University of New Mexico Regional Planning department. While at UNM, he was active in the international student community and ran for president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA); he won with an astounding 72% of the vote. During his term, he chaired the Student Fee Review Board and was committed to providing more transparency and equal allocation of funds. He would go on to serve as the Planning and Land Use Director for the City of Española.

To honor his legacy, the Muhammad Afzaal Hussain Scholarship has been established with a lead gift by Sarah and Doug Brown, Chair of the UNM Board of Regents and Dean Emeritus of the UNM Anderson School of Management. The scholarship will be awarded to an incoming or returning UNM international undergraduate or graduate student from the Middle East or South Asia (i.e. Pakistan, India). The scholarship may be used to pay for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and other allowable miscellaneous expenses related to the cost of attendance at UNM.
