The UNM Women’s Rugby Club has been a staple in women’s sport for almost two decades. This club has developed and fostered women’s athletics, having garnished great results. Some of the players have had the opportunity to play select-side rugby, while one player went on to play at the National level and became a USA Olympian.
For the majority of our players, 2020 and 2021 were especially difficult, due to the COVID pandemic. Play was halted as the world came to a standstill amongst isolation protocols. The UNM Women’s Rugby Club is determined to resurrect our numbers and bring back victory. Our goal is to not only be very competitive within our union but to earn a trip to the USA National Collegiate Playoffs.
As with most collegiate rugby programs, the UNM Women’s Rugby team is a club sport, therefore not fully funded by the university. We rely on player dues, financial support from alumni, and donations from community supporters like yourself. Travel is also another challenge we face. Due to the large geographical area covered by our Union, our club must travel far distances, such as Wyoming and Utah, on a regular basis. We are all aware of just how costly travel can be, but the costs and logistics for a whole team are exponentially more difficult. We are talking about bus rental, multiple rooms for at least two nights, and at least one team dinner to alleviate food costs on the road.
We have a fantastic young group of women with a ton of potential! We will continue building on that potential while also expanding the growth of the team. The foundation has been set, and with your kind donation, you can help fuel the future success of this club.
How You Can Help
The players' dues, unfortunately, are not enough income to fulfill the operational costs of running the team. Our dues have been further stretched as we recover from a year without substantial income due to COVID-19. As our program looks to further our ambitions and play at a nationally competitive level, we are in need of everyone’s help to support and boost this program.
